British American Tobacco South Africa - Our South African economic impact

Our South African economic impact

BAT South Africa makes a critical contribution to our national economy.

BAT South Africa paid in excess of R13.6 billion in tax revenue in 2019 alone. In 2019 we also employed more than 1 100 people directly in the BAT South Africa business and bought goods and services worth R6 billion from local suppliers.

South Africa is home to one of the largest BAT factories globally.

As the largest employer in the Heidelberg area, our factory has the capacity to produce more than 27 billion cigarettes a year for local and export markets, as well as processed leaf tobacco (known as cut rag tobacco) for export.
